クロード・モネ（Claude Monet 1840-1926）は、印象派を代表するフランスの画家です。「印象派」という言葉は、パリ・サロンから独立して1874年に開催された第一回独立展で展示されたモネの作品《印象・日の出》に由来しています。
フランスの田舎を記録しようとするモネの野望のなかで、光の変化と季節の移り変わりをとらえるために、時間帯や視点を変えて何度も同じ風景を描く方法を確立しました。《睡蓮》連作など印象派を代表する絵画を遺しました。

[1] This painting is the last of a group of four canvases begun by the artist in the summer of 1881, the first three of which are all signed and dated 1881. The artist started on the NGA painting in October 1881, but later reworked much of the foreground, at which time he added the current signature and incorrect date.
